Y3&4 Literacy Club
The children have used their knowledge of owls and their understanding of poetry, in particular rhyme and rhythm, to create wonderful poems!
Some of them wrote a fact that they were most excited about.
The children listened to amazing information about owls. They watched video clips of owls 🦉 in flight, discussed their new knowledge and wrote their favourite facts.
The children read the fascinating picture book ‘I know how to draw an owl’ by Hilary Horder Hippely. This is a visually compelling, compassionate look at the often misunderstood situation of homelessness. The main character Belle, lives in a car with her mum. Each night she is comforted by the ‘ hooty lullaby’ of an owl. The mesmerising owl brought her a sense of comfort.
There’s a ‘Rang-tan’ in my bedroom Poem.
The children read and discussed this poem.
The dual narrative from the child’s point of view and that of the young orangutang’s fascinated them.
Opportunities for dramatic readings were given, and the children gave great performances.
The children began their learning journey with a discussion about rainforests and their value. The sad destruction of these rainforests by human intrusion, primarily for palm oil was also spoken about. The children were able to verbalise their opinions.
They then researched orangutangs that live in the rainforest and watched videos that demonstrated the intelligence of these amazing creatures.
The children noted and shared what they felt were the most fascinating facts.
