Estimating and measuring length of objects

To be able to choose and use appropriate standard units to measure lengths and heights in any direction.

To be able to read relevant scales to the nearest numbered unit.


  • How do we line up the item alongside the ruler? Why is it so important that it is lined up correctly?
  • What units do we use to measure length?

Choose six items to measure to the nearest half cm using a ruler. 

First estimate, measure then order all the objects according to their measurements.

Check your work by putting the actual objects in order.

Year 2 - Measure lengths using uniform units.

Use a centimetre ruler to measure three objects . Establish that the objects are the same number of cm.

Choose different objects that you think might be smaller or bigger than one centimetre.
