Science
For Science Focus Week 2023, the theme was Science all around us. In 3GC, we carried out lots of different activities, experiments and immersive experiences to really engage, excite and educate our class. Here’s what we learned about.
Monday - we began the week discussing our genetic inheritance, discussing why we look the way that we do and we explored our DNA and what makes each of us, who we are. We even made our own genetic monsters from two different monsters and created new family trees for them too!
Tuesday - we looked at Sir Isaac Newton as our famous scientist. We refreshed our learning skills about forces and gravity and we competed reading comprehensions about Sir Isaac Newton, made fact files about him and vibrant posters too. We also explored air resistance and had the opportunity to make and test our own parachutes.
Wednesday - we explored human and animal skeletons because we had a special visitor arrive in our school playground. We classified animals as vertebrates and invertebrates and explored the bones of the human skeleton.
We also explored chemical reactions. This gave us the opportunity to make our own slime (in the morning) and using the story of the Firemaker’s Daughter, in the afternoon we made our own fireworks in a bottle and then drew our results.
Thursday - we explored changing states of matter. We had the opportunity to classify objects as Solids, Liquids or Gases and we took part in games where we could act as particles do in the different states of matter. We completed an experiment using ice where we could observe how ice can change state depending on certain factors. We also drew our observations and made conclusions based on what we’d seen. We could also describe what reversible changes and irreversible changes were based on our learning.
Everyone in the year group had the opportunity to make a chocolate rice krispy cake too - discussing the chemistry that was taking place as they did so and getting to taste the fruits of their labours!
Lastly, on Thursday, Year 3 made SCIENCE acrostic poems; discussing scientific vocabulary and trying to use rhyme too.
Friday - Class 3GC took part in an experiment to see how their heart rate changed or was altered by exercise. They made predictions, conducted their experiments, recorded their results and made bar graphs to show their findings. Finally, we finished the day and the week with an exhibition of their work to the parents in our school hall.
