Year 3 Level Task -

LI:To be able to use and understand the suffix –ly when it is added to words ending with y.

Suffixes are letters that can be added to the end of words to change their meaning.

• Adding the suffix -ly, turns an adjective into an adverb

'nice' becomes 'nicely'

• If the word ends with 'y', the 'y' becomes an 'i', and then add -ly

'happy' becomes 'happily'

• However if the root word ends with'y' and is longer than 1 syllable, you must change the final 'y' into an 'i' before you add 'ly'.

LI:To know that the /dʒ/ sound spelt as ge and dge at the end of words, and sometimes spelt as g elsewhere in words before e, i and y.
