Children of Winter
In English, we have been reading Children in Winter by Berlie Doherty. This powerful historical story is set during the time of the plague and follows the lives of children trying to survive in a world filled with fear, loss and uncertainty. Through the novel, we have explored what life was like during this difficult period in history and how ordinary people were affected by extraordinary events.
We have carried out detailed character analysis, exploring how the characters change and develop throughout the story. The children have written a “day in the life” diary entry from a character’s perspective, using historical detail and empathy to bring the setting to life. We have also written descriptive pieces, letters, and reflective responses to key events in the story, focusing on vocabulary, atmosphere and emotional depth.
Through reading and writing, Year 6 have developed their understanding of historical context, character motivation and the importance of resilience and hope in challenging times.
Eye of the Wolf
In English, we have been reading "Eye of the Wolf". This story is about a wolf who has lost nearly everything on his journey to the zoo, including an eye and his beloved pack. The boy too has lost much and seen many terrible things. They stand eye to eye on either side of the wolf's enclosure and, slowly, each makes his own extraordinary story known to the other..........
Master storyteller Daniel Pennac weaves a tale that is magical, mysterious and utterly unforgettable.
